Verão Saturno
Summer Saturn
About to turn 35 years old but still struggling to live off his music, Samuel goes to Lisbon to give a concert. He stays over at Teresa’s, his girlfriend’s mother, a woman who resists getting old. Between the two lost souls a connection develops, and together they find a way to evade melancholia and the pressures of time.

Best Medium Length Film - Honorable Mention, Achtung Berlin 2018
Jury Reasoning: “Director Mónica Lima manages to draw her protagonists in a multi-layered way with precise omissions. In this way, the lost feeling of a generation of artists in big cities appears behind the implied Amour Fou."
Prädikat Besonders Wertvoll, Deutsche Film- und Medienbewertung, 2018
Jury Reasoning: “From the quite simple story of a temporary encounter, a multi-layered plot emerges, which, without much prior knowledge of the backstory of the characters, creates the attitude towards life of two people who are mysterious but never dismissive. As in the piece of music that Samuel later performs at his concert, various layers are superimposed in the film, the story keeps running, with loops and resonances that create a narrative and aesthetic ground of a piece of art so full of melancholy, as of joie de vivre. A sensual film with a captivating atmosphere.”

“Mónica Lima continues her cinema of subtle clarity, elevated here to an impressive conceptual exploration. Namely: to each scene in the film corresponds a single shot, made in its duration, depth of field and by the use of panoramic shots. This produces an object that sways (as do the curtains with the wind, at one point,) between its main character and his surroundings, always in slow back-and-forth pans that seem to enjoy more what is in between than what is at the corners of the frame. A formal investigation (which recalls Hong Sang-soo's zooms) that reflects Samuel's own story, [a character] lost between Berlin and Lisbon, between his girlfriend and her mother, between dependence and independence, between recognition and anonymity.”
Diário de Notícias / Artes - Salaviza arranca a bela fornada nacional do Curtas
“Mónica Lima films everything with startling silences and a camera that knows how to seduce with small, smooth glides. In fact, everything is smooth and natural, especially the serene Jaime Freitas, an actor who plays with a captivating tenderness, and a Rita Loureiro who makes our hearts beat faster. In short, a session that has three big favorites for the best national short film award.”
Público / Ipsilon - A curta portuguesa está bem e recomenda-se
“Verão Saturno is an attentive and discreet polaroid of the emotional limbs of two people waiting for the next step in their lives.”
